Great American Ethics
Count a captured decision in dollars and you have counted the smallest part of it. The larger cost is what it teaches — that the rules are for other people, that the written standard and the real one are different documents, and that the honest way of doing things is the naive way.
That lesson is expensive, it compounds, and no appropriation reverses it.
The standard, and where it is written down
The American ethical standard is not a mood. It is written down, and it is checkable:
- The founding documents, and the plain-language promises in them.
- The laws Congress writes for everyone else — the clearest available statement of what Congress itself says is right.
- The social contract as citizens actually hold it, which is the yardstick this site measures against. See The Social Contract.
When those three disagree with each other, the disagreement is the finding.
How a hijacked Congress degrades it, act by act
The damage is not abstract. It shows up as specific, documented practices, each of which is recorded as a named problem with its sources attached:
- Exempting itself from its own laws — the rule applies to the country and not to the body that wrote it.
- Settlements paid and hidden — a wrong is compensated with public money and the record of it is kept from the public that paid.
- No penalty for stonewalling — an agency declines to produce what it owes, and nothing happens to anyone.

What it costs a country
- Honest actors are outcompeted, and they notice.
- Citizens who follow the rules learn that following them was optional.
- Trust becomes a thing only naive people extend — which is exactly the condition capture needs to keep operating.
Restoring the standard is the point of the whole movement
