The read-only roll-up

The .io door carries a roll-up stitched together from the four party doors, and it is read only.

Why read-only is the right answer​

Voting on trust is an act inside a community you belong to. If this door accepted trust votes, three things would follow immediately, all bad:

  1. Cross-party vouching becomes a weapon. The cheapest way to damage another community's mesh would be to vote in it.
  2. The signal stops meaning anything. A number assembled from people with no way of knowing is noise wearing a decimal point.
  3. This door stops being neutral ground. The one thing the .io has that the party doors do not is that nobody is competing on it.

Read-only keeps all three from happening, at the cost of one feature nobody actually needed here.

What the roll-up is for​

  • Seeing the whole citizen base at once — how large the verified mesh is across all four doors, which is the number that determines whether any cross-party decision is worth anything.

  • Honesty about coverage. Where a door's mesh is thin, the roll-up says so rather than presenting a confident aggregate over a small sample — the same coverage discipline used everywhere else on this site. See Evidence.
