No removing democracy at home

A country needs intelligence services. What it cannot survive is intelligence services that operate on the electorate rather than for it.

An election is only real if the people running the machinery of the state accept its result and do not work to shape it in advance. This page is about the three specific ways that gets undone, each written so a claim about it can be checked or fail.

Collection turned inward

Capability built for foreign threats, pointed at domestic political activity. The concern is not that agencies collect — it is that the same capability works identically on a hostile service and on a campaign, and only a rule separates the two.

The test: was the collection predicated on a foreign threat, on a record, before it touched a domestic political target? Where the predicate was assembled afterwards, that is the finding.

Classification deciding what voters may know

The sharpest one, because it does not require doing anything to anybody:

Secrecy that protects sources and methods is legitimate, and this movement does not propose ending it. Secrecy that protects a decision from its own electorate is a different object wearing the same label. The two are told apart by asking who is harmed by release — an adversary, or an agency's position in a domestic argument.

Investigative authority on an election calendar

Investigations start, pause, become public and become quiet. When the timing of those events tracks an election calendar rather than the evidence, the authority has become a participant in the election.

The test: does the sequence of investigative events correlate with the evidentiary record, or with the political one? Both are documented. They can be laid next to each other.

Why this is a citizens' issue and not a specialists' one

Because it decides the value of a vote. A citizen who votes with less than the relevant facts, on a choice narrowed before it reached them, has cast a real ballot in an unreal election. That is a larger theft than any single bad law, and it is invisible by design — which is why it needs naming rather than assuming.
